Is Eric Braeden Leaving the Y&R? Billionaire Victor Newman Reported to Exit Due to Contract Dispute

UPDATE (10/24/09): Eric Braeden will remain on Y&R. He will return to the show after a brief storyline-dictated exit on November 2, 2009.

The Original Story (9/29/09):

On September 28, 2009, soap columnist Nelson Branco reported that Emmy winner Eric Braeden, well known for his portrayal of billionaire business tycoon Victor Newman, will be leaving CBS’s The Young and The Restless, a decision that has been reached after a lengthy period of contract negotiations.

Braeden first joined the show in 1980 to help Katherine Chancellor run Chancellor Industries. Eventually, he formed his own company, Newman Enterprises, and his marriage (and subsequent remarriages) to Nikki Newman has been one of the show’s most popular pairings. Victor is perhaps most well known for his long-standing feud with nemesis Jack Abbott that has been an integral part of the show’s storylines for several years.

What Will Happen to Victor Newman?

After being shot three times by Patty Williams (also known as Mary Jane Benson), Victor barely survived. At the hospital, he was told that he had only a week at most to live and needed a heart transplant in order to survive. The easiest exit would of course be to deny Victor a heart transplant and have him pass away; however, considering the incredible outrage that was generated by the recent death of Colleen Carlton, writers should think twice before killing a nearly 30-year veteran so suddenly.

Instead of killing off the character, Nelso Branco reports that Victor has been written out of the story and has already taped his last scenes. Apparently, Victor and his former wife Nikki will reunite once again and leave for an extended vacation. It is unclear how long the pair will be gone for, and what, if any, implications this storyline will have for Melody Thomas Scott’s stay on the show. Scott, who portrays Nikki Newman, just returned on September 22 after an extended absence when her own contract negotiations went south in early summer 2009.

Why are So Many Soap Stars Being Asked to Take Pay Cuts?

All soaps are operating under reduced budgets. Show veterans both understand and accept that they have to take pay cuts. According to Nelson Branco, Y&R has been asking its actors to take pay cuts when their 13-week cycles expire, rather than when their contracts expire, which is what both Braeden and Scott opposed.

As one show insider puts it, “Everyone knows they have to take a slash in pay … [T]he issue is that their current contract isn’t being respected. Once you open up a contract during a cycle, the original contract is null and void and you must start over from scratch.”

Braeden was willing to take a pay cut in 2010 when his current contract with the show expired. He had asked to keep his current salary until that time.

Will Eric Braden Return to the Y&R?

Nelson Branco reports that on his last day at Y&R, Braeden told the cast and crew that he may never be back, but he thanked them all for decades of memories. Of course, in addition to Melody Thomas Scott, Braeden’s co-star Jess Walton (Jill Abbott) also walked out earlier this year when asked to take a pay cut, and both Walton and Scott are still on the show. Thus, it is unclear whether Braeden’s absence will ultimately be permanent or only temporary.

How will Y&R go on without “The Great Victor Newman?”

Victor’s youngest son, Victor Newman Jr. (more commonly known as Adam Wilson) has been shown to have inherited his father’s ruthless side, which will be used as a way to soften the blow of Victor Sr.’s absence.

A casting call has also been issued for a new villainous millionaire, named Tucker, who will help fill the void left by the business tycoon. As one show executive said to Nelson Branco, “The casting call is not a scare tactic [to force Braeden to take the pay cut]. Tucker is a real role.”

I personally look at Y&R because of the great storyline Victor plays. With him being gone the soaps will not be the same. I don't like Adam at all and really disagree with his storyline. I had already stopped watching daily because of the ways the acts were going and now that Nikki and Victor aren't there I know all my family will stop watching. We all had a big discussion about this and we are all in agreement. No Victor then No watching. He is the best actor and his character will be greatly missed.

Personally I think the show has gotten stupid and extends stupid storylines way to long and beats the dead horse on revamped storylines. Victor, Nikki and Jill are no great loss to the show, they have married everyone on it multiple times and they are as old as the story. I think if the writers use the newer characters they could recreate a show that is about something. Chance is a good character and Patty was fab. I will quit watching if they keep doing hatchet jobs on the plot- hate adam and the whole sharon baby switcho in the works. Will stop watching if that keeps happening. Lose Victor though- he is not likeable.

The show has really gone downhill...why are you not getting rid of the actors who most people don't like...Adam (let him be caught), Ashley (let her go crazy for awhile off air), Abby (who is a poor actress) go off to live with Tracy (who does a GREAT job)while her mother recovers, Dr. Taylor become a "hero" of sorts telling the truth to save Sharon (who is doing a great job...and in a story line should not have this happen), get some "staff" on at the hospitals which makes the story lines so rediculous..same as the "security" at the ranch...come on! Honour the contracts that are in place...give us some enjoyment to watch and quit this darkness and misery...we want some happy endings...boy the writers have a long way to go to win back viewers.
Long standing main characters are a value...don't let our favourite "mustache" leave.

When it looked like Melody Thomas Scott was getting the boot, I decided I would stop watching if they killed off Nikki. I was relieved when I learned she was coming back, and am glad to finally have her back. But if Victor is killed off (or if someone replaces Eric Braeden in the role), I will no longer watch the show.

Keep Victor, Nicki and Jill. They are the backbone of Y&R.
They spoiled Adam's character. He is Hope's son and they could have made him a wonderful person. Instead he is a creep. Get rid of him. Do not care for the actor. The original one was much better.
Bring back Dru and Cristine. Glad that Nina is back.
Also what really happened to Skye? I'm sure that David did not kill her.

That whole "Chipmunk" storyline was stupid and ridiculous! Keep Victor and bring back some of the shows great characters like Dru and Malcolm.

Even people who don't watch Young and the Restless, if you mention it to them, the first thing they say is "the one with Victor Newman?". So I think CBS has made a mistake. I can't stand Adam, he is way out there in left field crazy. The storylines are just insulting to me as a viewer, most of the time anymore all I can say when watching this show is "as if"!! I've been a viewer since the start of the show. I have stopped watching due to the baby stealing and the poor writing. When Brad Carlton was written off the show, I stopped watching for several weeks. With Victor Newman gone it will not be the same show. The Adam story line has been stupid. Ashley is portrayed as stupid when she was a strong character. Put Deacon back on Bold and Beautiful. Write off Daniel and Amber. The whole chipmonk story line with Kevin was too stupid to believe. Most people would be in jail for all that has happend with Daniel, Amber, Kevin and Jena. I know it's a soap but how about making it more real for viewers, don't make us feel stupid for watching. I won't be back for several weeks, if then if Victor and Veteran actors keep leaving like John Abbott. Cut Gloria, Jeff, Noah, Eden, Billy,Mac and Devon. I'm done with the show!

The writers are making a lot of mistakes and a lot of faithful people that use to watch Y & R are stopping because of the storyline. I mean give me a break...while are you allowing Adam's character to get away with so much. Him taking Sharon's baby and passing it off as Ashley's was down right cruel. That was the last straw for me, and I've watched the Y & R for over 30 years. And if Victor is leaving the show you need to have it so that it appears as he and Nikki are together, which means Nikki will need to leave the show as well. They belong together, so it would only make sense.

We are great fans of Young and the Restless, on my lunch hour when I was working I would take my lunch in order to watch the program. If Eric Braeden leaves the program will lose many viewers. Since I have retired I know many people that watch the program including friends and relatives, that audience will be lost no matter who they tend to replace. Let it be known, no one can take the place of Eric as Victor Newman and we all agree. I have watched the program before he married Melody the first time. I truly hope that you can give him a contract that will satisfy the Great Victor Newman, if not, goodbye, we have enjoyed his performance on this show.

Here is my feeling which really doesnt amount to anything. If you loose Melody Thomas (horrible actress), Abby, Adam, Gloria, William,and Ashley you have Victors salary all taken care of now. Melody walks around like she has a load in her pants and her acting is appaling. Just because she is married to a writer doesnt give her immunity from getting let go. As for the other characters they do nothing at all for the show in fact they are embarrasing at times to watch because they are so bad. Start writing something with life. Switching a baby, come on now do they really think we are that stupid? This show is really not fun to watch any longer and from the viewership Y&R is receiving they are in on my goodness mode how do we save this show?

I was 14 yrs. old in 1973 when I began watching Y&R. I remember Lance Prentiss(John McCook),Lori,Peggy, the first Jill and all of the storylines up to this point. I remember the debut of "Victor Newman" and wow did I have a big crush. I totally agree that without him the show will flop. The orginal Adam was smart to get out when he saw where his storyline was going. I have no connection at all with the current Adam. I had predicted the baby switch when Ashley made it known that she was "due" at the same time as Sharon. One thing with soaps it seems that the same basic storylines are repeated like the baby switch between Shelia and Lauren. I really like that Y&R brought back Phillip C III. What about a storyline between Phillip C and Rafee? Anyway to many opinions to post here. Y&R needs to think very carefully about letting EB go then it will be to late like they did with Don Diamont who now on B&B is silly with the old Victoria. I stopped watching B&B months ago. I bought a VCR when they first came out for the sole purpose of taping Y&R. Don't let it end!

I have been watching since 1987 and I don't know if I can go on watching without Victor Newman. Eric Braeden is an amazing actor who has done a fantastic job as Victor Newman and the show would not be the same without him. There is no way Adam can ever fill his shoes. He is evil to the core and from what I have read, most people hate him. He needs to go away and Victor needs to stay. Although Victor is ruthless, he also has compassion and charm that draws people to him. I have a feeling the show will lose lots of fans if Eric Braeden leaves and I hope they find a way to resolve their issues and he remains on the show. I wish Eric Braeden the best of luck with whatever it is he decides to do and may he continue to be successful in his career endeavors.

There is no way the show will continue the ratings that it has enjoyed over the last 20+ years. It may be some kind of ploy to increase ratings or whatever. i Just don't see them letting Victor go. There are to many storylines that cannot be answered or filled but by TGVN. He is one charachter in my opinion that cannot be replaced. He is a vintage car on the show. Jill & Katharine? That rivalry is overdone. It is not the same as Jack & Victor. Who will Nikki be with? Please don't let Eric Braeden slip through your fingers. Y&R without Victor, knowing that this could have been prevented, is enough of a reason to give up watching Y&R. I have been watching this show since it started. The story lines now are just awful. They go on and on....... Ashley carried a dead baby for how long with no health issues? Sharon is just going no where and The Coffee house gang is just stupid. I am not sure why I still watch it. In the past story lines have started and faded away but now the women are weak and the men have No lives. Please bring back some good story lines and keep the main players - I am not sure how this show remains #1 in the ratings -

I watch Y & R because of Eric Braeden, playing the role of Victor Newman, and If they begin to lose the veterans like him, his wife and Jill, etc. the show won't be the same, or worth watching anymore for me, and I'm sure many more feel this way. I started watching Y&R in the beginning with my mother. We watched because my brother, Ed, worked behind the scenes and won an Emmy for his work on the show. We got hooked!!!!! Both my mother and brother have died but now my children and their children are hooked as well. We have been discussing Eric leaving and the horrible story lines. What has happened to CBS? We have stuck it out because of "Victor, Nikki, Mrs c., Ester, Jill, Nick & Sharon and the hope that CBS would realize that their current writers need to go back to school and learn to write. Let go of the people that are so DULL that I do other things when they are on. Get rid of the "chipmunk" idea, can you say looser. Get rid of Adam as well, he's unbelievable, I mean really unbelievable. How many people could you get rid of to keep Victor, I can count at least 6. Maybe if you got rid of them you could bring back Dru as well as keeping Victor. If you get rid of the writers and start over you could do alot for the story line and keep the fans happy. Happy fans could keep you from going out like GuidingLight.
Think about it CBS because I'm sure that there are a lot of people, including my husband, children and me that could find something to do at that time if Victor goes and things don't change. I've watched the show from the beginning. I will NOT watch any longer if Victor is not on the show - PERIOD! Kay Chancellor, Jill Abbott, Victor Newman, Nikki Newman Abbott, Jack Abbott, Ashley Abbott, Phillip Chancelor, Nina Webster, Tracy Abbott, Nick, Sharon and Phyllis, Esther, should ALL stay. As long as I can remember i have been watching Y&R, I love the character Victor Newman. I think that Nikki and Victor are the biggest stars on your show. I think that Eric Braeden is so talented and i cannot believe you will let him go. I think he made the show what it is today and to let him go just shows you guys don't care about your viewers. The ratings for Y&R are going to go down terribly.....I have watched Y&R since it first aired on TV... The storyline of Victor and Nikki Newman has been one of the biggest highlights on this show.....I am very disappointed in the higher ups handling the negotiations for these two....sounds like they need to move on as well.....why don't you write off some of the other characters that we don't care about like Adam and Deacon......these too are horrible actors and they are both too creepy.

Well I watched the Y & R since Eric Braeden first appearence and if he goes I will no longer watch the show. I don't care for his continued roles with Melody Scott, but I love to watch Victor and love his style.
His role as Victor Newman no one can duplicate, and the Y & R will never be the same. Once he is gone I will no longer be interested in the show and the Y & R will lose many of loyal viewers, because of a simple request that could have been arranged or extended until 2010, especially for such a good actor. Everyone should not have to suffer do to a few peoples ignorance or unwillingness to compromise for such a brillant actor.

I have been watching since I was a teenager I am now in my 30's and Victor is the Y&R. I will not watch anymore. the story lines are dragging on and on and If Adam is to be the next villan I will definately not watch. I am exhausted I only watch by recording DVR first that way I can fast foward through the parts that I don't want to watch that would be any story line that has to do with Boring ass Lily or cane. The evil Adam story line has dragged on 4ever and honestly I liked Y&R before because its story line was somewhat realistic compared to other soaps but now with the fake giving birth and all this other fake stuff thats been going on its driving me away. Victor needs to stay or they will find out that will be the last straw for a lot of the viewers that are still watching, it will be the next Guiding Light.

Also, in our salon we watch the soap everyday & we will no longer have it on after he is gone. So sad. The show just won't be the same w/out him!!! What has happened the Y&R. How can the Bold & the Beautiful beat Y&R in the rating? I can remember about 2 years ago commenting that the B&B add cast members so that It would no longer be call the Brooke and Ridge show. I can say that they made great choices by bringing in Heather Tom and several other cast members from other soaps. However with Y&R the show has really gone South. Now you take a crucial character like Eric Braeden out of the show which was considered a major player in the soap and let him go without a fight. I just don't know how long this soap opera is going to last. The show doesn't have anyone in it who is happy anymore every character in the soap is going through some type of drama, and it has become a show that if you stop watching it for a month, nothing has really changed. And the character Adam, every time I see him I turn the channel until I think another character is on. If you are going to have Victor son play his name sake find a more believable character that at least looks the part! If it is a matter of pay cuts for Eric Braeden, take some of the other characters off the show that don't really have any major contribution to the show like Nina, her son, Chloe and Mack. And the story line with all the drama, it is ok to have a little drama, however Y&R has gone overbroad with all the saness. It is depressing the even turn to watch Y&R. The ship is sinking fast. You need to put more spice into the soap and bring Eric Braeden back before the soap sinks like the titantic!!!

I understand that actors take pay cuts. But why ask them to take one mid-contract, after they have already dealt with one? I am furious that the producers/executives are letting this fine actor go. Victor is the character people love to hate, which makes the show quite exciting. I think another soap should pick him up. I am sure that their ratings will soar, while Y & R ratings will flop. Are you not satisfied that Guidling Light has already expired after decades on the air (radio/tv)? I used to go home and watch the stories immediately, and despised the fact that I could not see them like everyone else (being a teacher). I purposely even got the type of phone where I can see it when I get ready (Sprint TV). Of course, I have no reason to view your soap after his exit. As for the character playing Adam, Jr., you can forget it because he is a silly little actor. I still don't understand how you got rid of the actor that played the character before him. Victor Newman is the man we all love to hate. He is the hero and the villain. There is no one who can compare to his character. Virtually every other character somehow connects to Victor. We all wish we could be Victor Newman and have the power and money to do what we want. That's why we enjoy watching him. We either root him on or boo and hiss at him for his evil doings. When someone comes along doing their evil ways, we know Victor will get them in the end. I think most of us have been waiting for that with Adam. That is one of the most reprehensible plot lines I've seen in the history of Y&R. We know there has to be characters you despise or dislike, but what Adam has done is beyond evil. It's like how you feel about a child molester. There is no forgiveness. And in a temporary character maybe you could get away with that because then they just leave. He's Victor's son and would presumably remain on the show indefinitely. How could anyone ever like him? I have considered ceasing watching the show because of his torture of Ashley and causing her baby's death and stealing Sharon's baby. And I'm not even sure why he started all of this. He's used everyone he's around and manipulated everything. It's all so ridiculous. At least Victor has normal relationships with SOME people where Adam does not. I'm Victor is Y&R and I'm not sure I want to continue watching.

We'll deal with that when it happens, but for now, knowing he is just gone for a bit is hopeful....however, moving up the storyline over Sharon's baby might ease the loss of Victor. People really want to see Adam get his, sooner than later (it's rediculous anyway)......but it just might take their minds off "The Mustache"

I work full-time, take on-line classes, I'm a mom, a wife, a friend to many, I spend a great deal of time with my pets. I fulfill many status's and roles but, I always...I said always find time to watch Y&R. Victor Newman IS the backbone of Y&R. This news of his departure is shocking and unbelievable! I won't be making too much of an effort to watch the show anymore. The story line has become extremely ridiculous. Adam's a clown...you can't be serious!!! I'm sure I'll tune in from time to time out of curiosity but, no longer will I make it a point to record and keep track of what's going on in Genoa City.

My family has affectionately called Y/R "The Victor Show" for years. Hard to picture it without him.
I wont watch it unless you bring him back .

The show will NEVER be the same. I MIGHT watch it when I can, but will never, ever be a true fan anymore. Right now I PVR it and it is my daily ritual to come home from work, pour a glass of wine and watch the Y&R. Those days will be over is Victor does not return. BRING VICTOR BACK, WHATEVER HE IS EARNING IS WORTH IT FOR THE SIMPLE REASON THAT YOU WILL NO LONGER BE THE NUMBER ONE SHOW AND YOU WILL LOSE WAY TOO MANY VIEWERS!!!!

Have been watching Y & R for nearly 30 years, and Victor has always been one of my favorites. To lose him will crush the show. The storylines in recent years have been horrible, offensive, and ridiculous. This is the perfect time to stop watching.

I too am a huge fan that has been watching the show for decades! NO Victor? Are you serious? I refuse to watch the show without him!!! I am disgusted that they could even think of letting such an icon GO!!! I absolute loathe Adam and think what he has done is unforgivable. His character should come clean and then be killed off. Y&R could save a lot of money by getting rid of bad actors like the one playing Adam's character and save the ones that your LOYAL fans know and love. My last episode was Victor's last episode.

I'm glad Victor is staying. He is the man you love to hate, and would really be missed. I think they need to re-cast Abby. She is a terrible actress! Really fake.
I'm still upset they killed off Coleen. They could have easily had her go to Europe to study art if they wanted her gone. They need to stop killing off young people like her and Cassy.
Last but not least. GET SHARON'S BABY BACK TO HER SOON!
