Days of Our Lives may be dying a slow death worthy of the best soap opera tragedies ever filmed. Can it be resuscitated?

This beloved soap opera has been a staple of daytime TV for over four decades. Finding itself in such troubled waters now is devastating for cast and fans alike.

Deidre Hall and Drake Hogestyn Lost in the Latest Negotiations

In November of 2008, NBC reached an agreement with Sony Pictures to keep Days of Our Lives on the air for another eighteen months. Longtime DAYS vets, Deidre Hall (Marlena Evans) and Drake Hogestyn (John Black) are out, as is co-executive producer, Ed Scott, fired last April. Such major changes can reinvigorate a flailing program or deal it a deathblow.

The Gutting of Salem Affects Loyal Fans

The loss of cherished characters leaves gaping holes in the population, and the remaining residents of the fictional Salem suddenly find themselves forced into conversations with people they have no reason to associate with. These interactions consume minutes but add nothing to the characters’ lives. Lesser characters now get more screen time but no material with which to make the most of it.

Loyal fans are flooding Internet message boards with their disappointment and distaste. The loss of Shawn and Belle, Jack and Jennifer, Marlena and John and other core Salemites, along with the reduction of screen time for Bo and Hope, Patch and Kayla, Roman, Abe, Caroline, Victor and other vets, has left DOOL littered with super-couple offspring and newcomers who have short contracts and no future. The characters that remain are routinely stripped of any hint of likeability via scripts that plunge them into unnatural situations and unbelievable pairings. If the viewers don’t care about the characters, a soap opera fails.

Writer’s Block Hurts Cast and Viewers

Days of Our Lives suffers from many concerns, but no issue looms larger than that of stale writing. The cast is the face of the show, but the writers are the heartbeat. If the writing flatlines, so does the soap. The best writing in recent memory aired during the writer’s strike that began in November 2007 and ended in February 2008. DAYS came alive. With the actors and actresses having meaty words and sharp action to hang their talents on, the storylines moved and upcoming episodes were eagerly anticipated. Then the strike ended and Days was soon back to the repetitive, uninspired material that keeps the characters one-dimensional and mired in soap opera quicksand.

Fumbles at the Top

Executive producer, Ken Corday, Sony Pictures and NBC have all fumbled the ball.

Agonizingly slow, sub-par writing is accepted as the norm, and even when an interesting new character is introduced, he or she is ultimately sacrificed. Nick and Morgan were two recent characters who brought something fresh and alive to their scenes. But both were given the boot while frivolous characters with few redeeming qualities, like Melanie, were given the green light. With each such misstep, the fans grow more disenchanted.

Saving a Once Great Soap

DAYS deserves to be rescued, but if the show is to be saved, the writers, producers, owners and network, must recognize important differences and act on them. There is a subtle but vital difference between slow and plodding. There is a glaring difference between bland and colorful. Failing to address those differences is what keeps DAYS clinging to life support.

The Danger Remains - Is the Sand in the Hourglass Running Out?

Recent rating upticks in the 18-34 and 18-49 women’s demographic may prove to be the final nail in the coffin if those successes are viewed as validation. Such an assumption may lead to even more complacency until all that is wrong with DAYS sneaks up on the unsuspecting powers-that-be and delivers the fatal blow once and for all.

If a blackjack player fails to hit a 16 when the dealer has a face card showing, then goes on to win the hand, it reinforces his instinct to hold on to that 16 the next time the same scenario presents itself. But in the long run, as any successful blackjack player knows, that’s just bad playing. A hand or two may be won, but the odds are deeply stacked against survival in the long run.

Such is the danger for Days of Our Lives. Those in charge have forgotten what really works and are making decisions that plant the seeds of demise. And just like the owner of the badly played blackjack hand, unless meaningful changes are made, Days of Our Lives may be just a few grains of sand away from finding itself flat broke and out of the game.

I couldn' have said it better myself..Days has found the Black Hole of all Soaps......Could it be any worse....Deidre and Drake leaving is a disaster......The Sami/Nicole story ridiculous.....Couples are breaking apart.......Lucas never has made a choice that he could live with as far as the opposite sex..Dr. Dan is the Salem Pervert. His credentials should be redone.......Daniel should be ousted out of Salem. How dumb do the writers' think we are.......Nothing makes sense on the show any longer.......So there, I had my Rant......ShaSha

Having been a viewer & fan for 43 yrs, I am sicken to see Days go by the wayside like Another World & Santa Barbara, gone are the days when writers took pride in the storylines. Getting rid of the vets is a sure fire way of getting rid of long time viewers. Days doesn't hold my attention anymore, the only reason why I am still watching with one eye open is because I'm addicted to Days, like any addiction the viewers & fans will be weened off, that is what I find myself doing weening myself off from Days. Corday, your parents gave us what we wanted, you are not doing the same, so good luck with you teen storylines. The don't hold my interest & have no substance. I keep asking myself if Days can be saved, my heart wants to believe that it can but my head is saying no, not unless the writers really put pin to paper or should I say start striking the keys on the keyboard to write stories that have some substance & bring back the key characters. I have to agree with one of the guest who say give us 3 months, some of us would write a storyline that would take Days where it once was, to the top.

I think they were stupid to fire Sheffer and they should hire someone who loves soaps like Tom Consiullo to write. GIVE him the reins and all decision making power, other than getting rid of the vets and I think we would have a great soap again.

Well let me just say I totally agree with your wonderfully written article and it says what we fans have said for awhile, that the writting of this once great show is terrible. Ken C and Dena H are systematically destroying this show. As a big John and Marlena fan who has watch Days since day 1 Jan 23 is my last day to watch this show for ever!!!

Perfectly said!
I have been a Days fan for over 30 years and with that said,I am done with Days as of 1/23/09(J&M/Deidre & Drake last airdate)and there is so many like us out there that don't go to boards or Days web sites that feel the same way, enough is enough,Ken C.,you can have your over kill of the young people with pointless storys, pointless dialogue & pointless charactors!
*Days should be on top with J&M,Stefano,Bope,Tony & Anna,Steve & Kayla and the rest of the stronger Vets with very strong plot storys(love, passion, friendship, family, adventure),But Ken C. killed that with the past(2001)& persent writers team,Ken C.would save money,if he hired FanFic writers, they know the history of Days!
Ken C.Parents cared about the Viewers/Fans and their show,Ken C. don't,he has proven that with all the lies and having pointless charactor(waste of money)and not using the Vets more and geting back to basic of what a Soap is really about!
Sorry for the rant and Good Luck to the rest of the Viewers/Fans with the young people show and young dialogue and young storys that don't make any sense!!

Excellent article and very true.
I am 19 years old I don't want to watch a teen soap,if I want to watch the teens,I would go to cable and watch 90210 or O.C..
I watch Days for J&M & the Vets, but after the 2 top Stars got fired, there is not point of Days, because the rest of the Vets don't have a great storys,so with that,I to will be done, when J&M are done.
I really don't care about rating scale, but I do know is that in my age group we don't want to see bed hoping charactors or senseless storys and dialogue,I alway thought a Soap is about Passion,Love,Family,Friendship and Adventure(drama plots),but I guess Ken/Days lost sight of that!

As a long time Days watcher (34 years),I have to agree with one of the other guest comments. I don't even know why I watch it other than to scream out loud "this is so ridiculous!" Why do they keep repeating the same scenerios just with different characters? It becomes very apparent when the writers set up a story line exactly where and how it will end up.....it's been done so many times before with different people. Come on the fans deserve more than this. I also agree, why do all the good characters get written off and all the new ones get screen time? We want the original people we've grown to know and love. Get serious and give the fans what they deserve for their loyalty...not this nonsense we've had to put up with lately. Honestly, how can EJ not realize that Nicole is not really pregnant. He should be able to realize the difference between a baby and a fake bump. Please, we are not stupid people so don't have us watching something so ridiculous!! I've said enough...Momma T

I've watched since 1985 but Drake and Deidre's last day will also be my last day as a viewer. If Corday doesn't appreciate or respect me as a viewer I see no reason why I should giving him even a few seconds my time and energy. He made his choice and he chose to keep Dena Higley instead of the two stars that have brought him good ratings time and time again. Mr Corday, you deserve to have your show cancelled and I hope it is!

Great Article. I started watching Days in 1985 (when I was 9) and fell in love with all the "Supercouples" of the 80's most particularly Steve and Kayla. Lately, I find myself only watching the clips of Steve and Kayla on the internet and not watching Days at all. I have no interest in it as even the other characters (vets) that I would have enjoyed in the abscense of Steve and Kayla are usually absent from the screen too. I have no desire to watch Melanie 5 days a week. And while I like Sami, Nicole, EJ, etc, I have no desire to watch them everyday either. I find myself easily bored with the show and the lack of balance between the veteran's of the show and the younger actors thus I chose not to watch most of the time and feel that the show is just taking up space on my DVR. That's even sad for me to write. I hope the writers/execs are able to turn this around and quickly as I am sure I can't be the only long time viewer that feels this way. Renate

This article is right on the money.. Bravo you nailed it.
The downhill slide has been happening for awhile, the writing is the worst Ive ever seen, and ive watched for ver 30 years.. This show or its writers have no clue how to actually write a "Storyline" Everything just seems to be random dialog going nowhere.
And whats up with the music ?? I swear The Dr Perv/Chloe scenes with all that background soft porn music makes me want to puke and I cant hit the FF fast enough, Now they are even playing it during the Phillip Stephanie scenes... I remember when a couple made love (Usually MONTHS after you realized they had an attraction to let the excitement build) They always picked a beautiful song to play, Often with candles and romance... Now all we get are sleazy sex scenes that happen too fast, are rushed and prn music plays in the background... Gross..

Im not sure the show can be saved, and I dont think Corday wants to save it. He knows what the fans want and it seems he goes out of his way to do the exact opposite.
He is a disgrace to his parents legacy, and the years of loyalty from the fans of this show.

Shame on you Ken Corday

In Australia the show jumped four years - I missed Shelle, Broe (luckily most of the Island of Death with Andre) but once we jumped I started to lose interest. After 25 years?
Now I read more about it on the net than I watch and frankly I've gone cold turkey.
I look in occasionally in the hopes that something grabs me and pulls me back in but so far NOTHING!
I remember the term SUPER COUPLES - I remember running home from school and work so I could put the tape in and watch the show. I remember goosebumps when Steve kissed Kayla for the first time, when Bo & Hope made love in New Orleans and the moment Marlena realised that John Black was Roman Brady, her husband. Where are those goosebumps - certainly not in the crap we are watching now. Not one couple interests me.
Shirtless guys interest me and it seems that I get alot of that but where's the romance? Where's the passions? Where's my DAYS OF OUR LIVES?

It is so sad. I have been a Days viewer and fan for 40 years and I am just disgusted with the show now. Nothing but young people and laughable storylines. I agree the sex scenes are a new low. I remember the months and months of waiting for Steve and Kayla to make love, the reunion of young Hope and Bo in New Orleans. Now it is just wham, bam and thank you ma'am. It is a very sad state of affairs, indeed.

Excellent article. I am one of those loyal fans that was channel surfing back in Mar. 1986 when I noticed a handsome guy wearing an eye patch hiding in the closet of the apt of a beautiful nurse. I was totally hooked and wanted to see more. That lasted until Mr. Nichols left the show in 1990. I continued to watch -- I gave it 2 months thinking he would come back and then they decided to saddle Kayla with that terrible story so I left. I followed Ms Evans to GH and shortly after Mr Nichols came on the scene and I was there. After than I followed MBE to ATWT and then finally my favourites came back in 2006.
All I can say is why have the best in Daytime been put on the backburner and these useless characters getting all the airtime??? Well, I stopped watching and I tape and ff everything except if by any chance Steve & Kayla are on. I watched the show in Nov/08 (just 1 show)I think, us S & K fans were all excited about this love scene between Steve & Kayla happening (they hadn`t even touched since Mar.08 -- that is so out of character)and later we found out that the scene was cut out???
These people, are totally disrespecting what the fans want. So why should fans keep watching this garbage?? Who the heck wants Passions #2????? I agree with the John & Marlena fans. My favourites are Steve & Kayla #1 -- Bo and Hope #2 and John & Marlena #3. The awesome 6 should be left alone if anyone should be axed its -- Dr. Dan, Chloe, Nicole and most of all Melanie.
I hope tptb read your article and our comments and turn things around -- I have a feeling that more cuts are coming in the Spring and it may very well hit another very large fanbase. Do these people not like fans???? WTHAS&K????

wow, everybody is right about their comments. i don't want to believe it but it is true. i have been watching days for 30 plus years. and lately i have been missing watching days. to day i watched it for the first time in weeks and i was shocked to see the same things going on. same storys and no new ones and what is with Dr. pervert. like he just hops to woman and child. with cloe ? change the storys will you or don't drag them on so long. i agree the storys when they were on strick was alot more interesting to watch and they didn't drag on so long. i can understand with sami being she is pregant and all. the worst mistake you will do is to fase out the ones that have been on for years, don't you get it that is why we watch it. john and marlena leaving is the worst mistake you will ever make. they are really good actors and they do diserve what ever you are paying them. and the other actors that have been on there for years. just give them better storys and ones we can relate to. i was heart broken when we lost another world. i vowed not to every watch another soap except for days. and i have done that but please don't kick days to the curb. if you want rating and awards then change the writers not the actors with no actors no soap. think about it. thanks ....jane

When my calender on my desktop says 1/23/09 which is Drake Hogestyn's last day on DAYS thanks to Ken Corday letting him go, it will also be the end of DAYS for me after 23 years of watching this show. DAYS didn't appreciate the fact that Drake is the ONLY actor to stay loyal to ONLY DAYS (he turned down other projects to stay on this show) so they WON'T be getting my loyalty either. Good luck DAYS, you're going to NEED it

I have been a loyal viewer of Days from its first episode. It has been a part of my life for all those years. Part of my day whether or not I am home I record it if not. John and Marlena are the staples of this show. The episode on Friday where John is being hynotized and remembers his first love Marlena. What a wonderful expression on his face. It was the best and what I always waited to see. I can't imagine what my days will be when they are gone and I can no longer watch them together. It has been so long since they actually were together. There are so many fans who look forward to seeing John and Marlena, Bo and Hope, Patch and Kayla, Maggie, but with the original Mickey. I really miss seeing Mrs. H. It would be so good if we could get a chance to get a glimpse of her once again. If the TPTB would just realize what a jewel they have in Days It could be as it was when life was so beautiful in the Days of Our Lives. Please reconsider your decision to forever lose this great show. It will be sorely missed.

I have watched Days since the first episode. My mother is 83 years old and we both watch Days and then talk about what happened and what we think will happen. Just like reading the same book. The firing of the characters of John and Marlena are the last straw. As someone else said, key players have been cut and quickly picked up by other soaps. We are left with young actors and actresses that we have no connection with, no history. Then you write someone off and then try to replace them with an actor or actress in their place that you can't connect with, looks nothing like the actor that was fired. In trying to get younger viewers to the show do you not realize that it was our mothers, grandmothers, aunts and cousins that got us to watch in the first place? It is like a tradition. I honestly think that with digital programming in February and with the economy tumbling that more people will come back to network tv, out of financial necessity and the fact that digital programming looks as good as or BETTER than the satellite services. I think that if Corday would have been patient that in a few months things will change. I might be wrong, but I don't think so. I think that digital programming will bring the networks back to the front and back on top again. But in the mean time Days is "cutting it's nose off to spite it's face." Firing dedicated players that have been with the show for years, the same ones that we know everything about, we know what they like, dislike, we know what they have been through in their lives, we can connect with them. Instead we are left with young actresses who for the most part are "green." We have no connection with them. Who are their parents? Why are they even there? Have they ever eatten Mrs. Horton's doughnuts? If not, we don't need a dozen of them running around. Poor acting and no history, no connection. It is sad. Trying to bring in younger viewers and isolating the older, loyal viewers that would watch Days with their children and their children won't happen. You just don't get it. To capture younger viewers all you need to do is keep the older, loyal viewers content and we will hand it down, like we do with any other tradition. It is a sad, sad day when you fire your most popular, super couple. The peacock is starting to lose it's feathers - and it's viewers.

I Remember the good old Days when the show used to be interesting. Like The War between John and Stefano now that was a good storyline I would always tune in everyday to see what would happen but now the show as far as I'm concerned is ruined. everyday we are reduced to seeing characters we couldn't care less about while the most cherished characters that we have grown to love are on the back burner. The 2 Biggest Mistakes that Days has made in the past year has been hiring Dena Higley as Headwriter and getting rid of John and Marlena. It seems to me that Ken Corday wants Days to end because he's making all of these stupid decisions. With the way things are right now if they keep this up Days will not make it Past 2010.

I have also deleted DOOL from my DVR and have no intention of ever watching it again unless they bring back John and Marlena. This article says everything I'm feeling. I have watched this soap for 24 years, but I am done. It's bad enough they wrote Jack of the show, but this is too much for me. Dena H. nearly killed the show she was writing for on ABC and I was appalled to see she was hired for Days. The writing is horrible and they have absolutely no respect for the fans. I really think they are trying to kill this show.

Unbelievable. I think all of the Days viewers are just utterly disgusted over the dismissal of Deidre and Drake. I couldn't wait for John to get his memory back to see the great scenes between Marlena and him. It was this big build up to a big let down. I won't be watching Days anymore. I'm tired of watching a bunch of teeny boppers on this show. It used to be such a wonderful show. It is truly a shame. I was a fan since 1980 and now, just another let down non-viewer.

While I totally agree with you all, that the show is just not what it used to be, I'm not sure Dena is entirely to blame. She did write during the writers strike last year, and that was the best Days had been in years. The Colleen Brady storyline was great, as was the drama of Shawn's death, and Bo's illness.

But, that being said - I too have stopped watching as of Jan 23rd. And now that Steve, Kayla & Tony are going, I see no reason to start watching again. I've been watching since Janaury 1981 - and have been loyal for all these years. Too bad Ken Corday doesn't appreciate the loyalty of the fans, or the loyalty of his cast (Drake). It's sad...days has been a family tradition forever, and I just can't take it anymore. The Chelsea/Melanie/Stephanie/Chloe show holds no appeal to me. If they want to focus on the younger set, bring back Belle & Shawn...get Brady a real story....and bring back Eric. I want Hortons & Brady's (and Blacks)

I think that the writers are doing days a great injustice. They need to take pride in this soap as it has been a blazing gun for many many years. If's it going down in flames, then wake up and let it go down in flames fighting for the glory it deserves.

I have been a faithful viewer for almost twenty years and as of today will no longer be viewing this sad excuse for a soap opera. Who kills off a baby in their story line for ratings. They must have some really sick people writing their show that they would think that something like that would spike their ratings I feel very strongly that this is inacceptable and will no longer be watching the show! I hope there are more people that feel the same way. There is no need to support a show that has content like that.

My husband used to say, your stories are all about bed-hopping, and I would say, not this one. My days is more about mystery, and adventures, remember when Melissa was forced to go to another country with Alamaine and Jack had to rescue her, or one of my favorite when Bo stole Hope from the church and they were playing "Where have all the good men gone" while they took off on his bike. I'll never forget the love betweeen Patch and Kayla and what it took for them to get married. If Steve would be on the show now, he would have ripped Owen to shreds, the Dimera's wouldn't get a crack at him. I so sick of Kate, you can send her packing anytime and I wouldn't miss her at all. The same is for Daniel, the only thing he has done since he has got there is save lives and be a humper. Kate, Chelsea, Kate, Chloe, puke. I love Sami, she is a great mother and would like to see her find some happiness with Rafe, decent holidays, a little normalcy, and with somebody like Louis from Passions sure fits the bill. I thought when John came back , he gave the performance of his life, he should have won an emmy for his portrayal of his stepping "out of the box" John. I could care less if you bring back Marlena, she bored me to death. Bring back Eileen Davidson to play Susan, would be the bomb. I'd say she knows some of Stephano's secrets, plus the last time we seen Stephano's daughter Kristian, she was chained up in a dungeon. Wouldn't it be nice if she found her way home? I hate to say this but the time Bo and Hope are on there now, they have lost their spark. Bo needs to quit being commishioner and start being a cop again. Him and Hope need to find something dangerous and intriging to get into that will not leave their relationship, blah. I know we've seen this
play the switch the baby routine so many times, how long before we find out that Nicole has done it once again, and poor Mia is going to be devastated?.I would like to see Victor start dating Caroline. He's getting to grumpy. I don't have to have Marlena, just John, and I don't have to have Kayla, atleast Patch, please?????????
